Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion at Barbican Art Gallery

10.19.2010 · Posted in Comment, News

Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion is the first exhibition in Europe to comprehensively survey avant-garde Japanese fashion, from the early 1980s to the present. Curated by the eminent Japanese fashion historian Akiko Fukai, Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition explores the unique sensibility of Japanese design, and its sense of beauty embodied in clothing.

“It’s quite surprising that no one had wanted to tell the story of these designers before now,” says Catherine Ince, curator of Barbican Art Gallery. “We felt now was a good point for reflecting back on their influence and legacy.”

Japanese fashion made an enormous impact on the world fashion scene in the late 20th century and designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto redefined the very basis of fashion. Their works will be shown alongside Kawakubo’s protégé, the techno-couturier Junya Watanabe, together with the acclaimed Jun Takahashi, and the new generation of radical designers including Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu, Matohu, Akira Naka, Mina Perhonen and Mintdesigns.

X Factor Fashion Round-Up: Week 2

10.19.2010 · Posted in News

After last week’s  ’shambolic’ styling, did the X Factor team manage to make amends this week? Here’s what we thought.

Rebecca is a firm favourite with us when it comes to fashion. After last week’s elegant ensemble, she has done it again and wowed us in this super flattering body-con dress by Lisa-Marie Fernandez. Slicked back hair (very next season) and super dark lips make for a modern, sophisticated look. Not a bad word to say here!

Must have a rugby shirt

If there’s one thing you buy this month, make it a long-sleeved rugby shirt. It’s great for this transitional time of year when the weather is changeable and cold. Not only that, the retro sports/preppy look is a big trend in menswear this season. Just take a look at our Graduation trend for inspiration and key pieces.

Net-a-Porter’s founder Natalie Massenet talks about Mr. Porter

www.LDNfashion.net

“We believe the way men would like to shop has yet to be invented. Traditionally the men’s market is very small compared to the women’s and maybe that’s how it will stay, but let’s see if we can create the ultimate men’s shopping experience.

With Mr. Porter, we are not intending to just reskin Net-a-Porter and call it a men’s site. We’ve thrown away everything we know about shopping online and started from scratch because we’re working with a customer base that’s inherently not crazy about going into stores. We’re tailoring the navigation and the services to cater to the male psychology of shopping, which is very different from a woman’s. Men shop to build a long-term wardrobe, while women focus more on short-term, trend-driven pieces.”

Check out these boots

I've been so busy this week (which is why posts have been a bit on the iffy side -sorry) that I haven't even had time to go imaginary Net-A-Porter shopping. I tend to do a fantasy shop on Net-A-Porter at least twice a week. Mostly because it makes me happy but also because you never know when a million pounds might just fall at your feet, and you should have a clear idea of what to spend it on* just in case this does happen. It would be awful to be unprepared in that situation.
This evening I've had a quick look at the newest arrivals online and these Alexander McQueen boots are at the top of my shopping list - followed by that Versus skirt.

That's Saturday's Outfit Sorted

I've always thought people are pretty cruel when it comes to Rumer Willis, sure she doesn't look like every other girl in Hollywood but I think she always looks cool and has an interesting style. Anyway, what's wrong with not looking like you just stepped out of an episode of The Hills? Nothing, I say!
Last night Rumer was snapped leaving Premiere, in Hollywood, dressed in a lightweight military shirt over a luxe tank, with just a slip of lingerie showing. This is a great Saturday outfit, I think. The shirt is stylish (and warm enough for October weather) and toughens up a flirty camisole. Tomorrow is the day to copy Rumer.

Military shirts have been back in fashion for a few months now, so some of you will probably have them lurking at the back of your wardrobe. If not there are some great options for all budgets. The cream shirt with gold buttons from Topshop is affordable at £32, while Elizabeth and James' khaki silk shirt is an investment buy at £238.

What do you think of Rumer's look? Will you be wearing this style?

The effortlessness of the side braid means its a look that hasn’t yet tired - and while it may not be at the top of 2011’s hair trends it’s a subtle look and therefor not likely to die out quickly either. Here’s one way to give it an update: a simple headband.

How to dress: Paper bag waists
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/oct/09/how-to-dress-paper-bag-waists

There is an art to getting the paper bag waist right. You want gathers on the front only. The back view should be sleek and smooth. (A paper bag bottom is not a good look, unless you are a circus clown.) Wear a slender belt with it, a mere slip of a thing that underlines the shape of the fabric, rather than obscuring it.

12 Gorgeous Carey Mulligan Photos…

If I were a big shot celebrity photographer, I’d be clamoring to get jobs with Carey Mulligan. I bet she does not have a diva personality. And I bet she’d look great in every photo, as the following pictures can prove.

1. B/W

1

I love the overexposed parts of this photo. Oh if only I can do justice to really short  hair and smokey eyes…They say that anyone will look nice in a black and white photo but I say that this photo shows that Carey is truly genetically blessed.

2. B/W/Pink

2

Is it just me or does she look like a cross between Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn here? You agree, right? I think I will try this interesting photo post-processing one of these days.

3. All Natural

3

It is always admirable to see a young star who is okay with being photographed with only the littlest hints of makeup. While I like Carey with smokey eyes, I have to say that she looks beautiful in this photo, too.

4. Designer-Clad
